Why this isn't just "subtract the birth years"

Simply subtracting birth years (1995 - 1990 = 5) overstates or understates the true gap depending on where each birthday falls in the calendar year - it ignores the month and day entirely. This calculator instead works out the precise calendar difference, correctly handling cases where one person's birthday hasn't happened yet in the comparison year, which is exactly why the result here is 4 years (not 5) despite a 5-year gap between the birth years themselves.
