The formula

Each person's share of shared items, tax, and tip = (Their items / Total items) x (Shared + Tax + Tip) Their total owed = Their items + Their share of shared/tax/tip

Why proportional splitting is fairer than an even split

Splitting a bill evenly is simplest, but it means the person who had a side salad pays the same as the person who ordered a steak and two cocktails - fine among close friends who don't mind, but genuinely unfair in many group settings. This calculator instead splits shared items, tax, and tip proportionally to what each person actually ordered, so someone who spent more on their own food also contributes proportionally more to the shared costs, while someone who ordered modestly pays less overall.
