A calculation of past or hypothetical trades - not a prediction of future prices or investment advice.

The formula

Total cost = (Quantity x Buy price) x (1 + Fee %) Total proceeds = (Quantity x Sell price) x (1 - Fee %) Net profit = Total proceeds - Total cost
Example

0.5 units bought at $60,000, sold at $70,000, 1% fee each side: cost = $30,300, proceeds = $34,650, net profit = $4,350.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Enter the quantity you held.
  2. Enter your buy price and sell price per unit.
  3. Enter your exchange fee percentage to see the fee-adjusted result.

Why fees matter more than they might seem

A 1% fee sounds small, but it's applied twice - once on the way in, once on the way out - so it quietly eats into both sides of a trade. On a round-trip trade, a 1% fee on each side works out to roughly a 2% total drag on the position, which can meaningfully change whether a small price move nets a real profit or effectively breaks even. This is exactly why the fee field here applies to both the buy and sell legs separately, rather than as a single flat deduction.

Common mistakes

Forgetting fees entirely - a trade that looks profitable on raw price difference alone can turn into a loss once both buy-side and sell-side fees are factored in.
Not accounting for tax obligations on realized gains - depending on your jurisdiction, profitable trades may be subject to capital gains tax, which this calculator doesn't include.

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for taxes on gains?

No - this calculates the pre-tax net profit from the trade itself. Tax treatment of gains varies significantly by jurisdiction and individual circumstances.

What if my buy-side and sell-side fees are different percentages?

This calculator uses one fee rate for both sides for simplicity - if your rates genuinely differ, calculate each leg's fee manually using the same formula shown above and adjust the totals accordingly.

Can this show a negative result (a loss)?

Yes - if the sell price is low enough (or fees high enough) that proceeds don't cover the original cost, the result displays as a negative number representing a net loss.
