What a negative result means
A negative acceleration simply means the object is slowing down (or accelerating in the opposite direction of your chosen positive direction) - it's often called deceleration in everyday language, but physics treats it as just acceleration with a negative sign, following the same formula either way. A braking car, for instance, has negative acceleration if its direction of travel is defined as positive.

What does "9.8 m/s²" mean for gravity?
It means a freely falling object on Earth speeds up by about 9.8 meters per second, every single second it falls - after 1 second it's falling at 9.8 m/s, after 2 seconds at 19.6 m/s, and so on, assuming no air resistance.
Is acceleration the same as speed?
No - speed (or velocity) describes how fast something is moving right now, while acceleration describes how quickly that speed itself is changing. An object can move fast with zero acceleration (constant speed) or move slowly while accelerating rapidly.
