24
Use the same unit for every measurement; the result will be in that unit squared.
The formulas
Square: side^2
Rectangle: length x width
Circle: pi x radius^2
Triangle: 0.5 x base x height
Trapezoid: 0.5 x (base A + base B) x height
Example
A rectangle 6 x 4: area = 6 x 4 = 24. A circle with radius 5: area = pi x 25 ≈ 78.54.
Step-by-step guide
- Select the shape you're measuring.
- Enter its dimensions - the input fields update automatically for each shape.
- Read the area, shown in your unit squared.
Common mistakes
Mixing units - measuring one side in feet and another in inches will give a meaningless result. Convert everything to the same unit first.
Using diameter instead of radius for a circle - the formula needs the radius (half the diameter).
Frequently asked questions
What unit will my answer be in?
Whatever unit you entered your measurements in, squared - for example, if you entered feet, the area is in square feet.
How do I find the area of an irregular shape?
Break it into simpler shapes (rectangles, triangles) you can calculate separately, then add the areas together.
Is this the same as our Volume Calculator?
No - area measures a flat, two-dimensional space, while volume measures three-dimensional space. See our Volume Calculator for 3D shapes like cubes and spheres.
