The formula

Flat rate: Commission = Sales x Rate Tiered: Commission = (Threshold x Base rate) + ((Sales - Threshold) x Higher rate), if sales exceed the threshold

$45,000 in sales at a flat 6% rate: commission = 45,000 x 0.06 = $2,700. With a tiered structure (6% up to $30,000, 9% above), the same $45,000 in sales instead earns 30,000x0.06 + 15,000x0.09 = $1,800 + $1,350 = $3,150.
