How the three curve methods actually differ

A flat-points curve adds the same fixed amount to every score, which is simple but treats a 95 and a 55 identically in absolute terms. A square root curve (multiply the square root of the raw percentage by 10) gives a bigger boost to lower scores than higher ones - a 100 stays 100, but a 25 jumps to 50, a much larger relative gain than a 90 gets. Curving to a target sets the class's actual highest score as the new "100," then shifts every other score up by that same fixed amount - a common approach when an exam turned out harder than intended and the instructor wants the top performer to receive full marks.
