The formula

Overall grade = (Sum of points earned / Sum of points possible) x 100
Example

Four assignments scoring 85, 90, 78, and 92 out of 100 each: total earned = 345, total possible = 400, grade = 345/400 = 86.25%, a B.

This calculator adds up total points earned versus total points possible across everything, which works well for a straightforward "total points" grading system. Many courses instead use category weighting - homework worth 20% of the grade regardless of point count, exams worth 40%, and so on - where a single assignment's raw points matter less than which category it falls into. Common mistakes

Using this simple total-points method when your course actually grades by weighted categories - the two methods can give meaningfully different results.
Averaging percentages instead of raw points - a 10/10 assignment (100%) and a 45/50 assignment (90%) should be combined as 55/60 total points (91.7%), not simply averaged as (100+90)/2 = 95%.

Frequently asked questions

What letter grade scale does this use?

A standard US scale (93+ = A, 90-92 = A-, and so on down to 60 = D-, below that F). Some schools and instructors use a different exact cutoff, so check your specific syllabus if the letter matters precisely.

How do I include extra credit?

Add it as its own row with the extra points earned, but leave "points possible" at 0 if it's true bonus credit added on top of the regular total - or include it in an assignment's normal possible-points total if your instructor built it directly into that assignment.

Can I use this to predict my final grade before all assignments are graded?
