Your category weights should add up to 100% - check the "total weight used" figure to confirm.

The formula

Overall grade = Sum of (Category weight x Category score) / Sum of weights
Example

Homework 20% (88%), Quizzes 15% (75%), Midterm 25% (82%), Final 40% (90%): overall = (20x88 + 15x75 + 25x82 + 40x90)/100 = 85.35%.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Find your course's grading categories and weights from the syllabus.
  2. Enter your current score (as a percentage) in each category.
  3. Check that total weight adds up to 100% - the tool flags it in red if it doesn't.

Why weighted grading can surprise students

A common source of confusion: doing well on frequent, low-weight assignments (like daily homework) can create a false sense of security if a single high-weight category (like a final exam worth 40%) is still pending. Someone with a 95% homework average but weak exam performance can end up with a much lower overall grade than expected, simply because the exam category carries so much more weight per point. Understanding your category weights early in a course - not just your raw scores - is often the more useful number to track.

Common mistakes

Simply averaging category scores without weighting them - a 90% in a 10%-weight category and a 70% in a 40%-weight category should not be averaged as if they mattered equally.
Letting weights add up to something other than 100% - if a syllabus lists weights that sum to 95% or 105%, double-check for a typo or a missing/duplicate category before trusting the result.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't have a score yet for one category?

Remove that category temporarily to see your current grade based only on completed work, or enter a projected/estimated score to see how it might affect your final grade once it's done.

What if my course drops the lowest score in a category?

Calculate that category's average separately, excluding the lowest score first, then enter that adjusted average into this calculator for the category.

How is this different from the Final Exam Grade Calculator?

This tool finds your current overall grade from known category scores. The Final Exam Grade Calculator works backward from a target grade to tell you what score you specifically need on a remaining final.
