LiveResult
4h 15m
Decimal hours
4.25
The formula
Result = (Hours1 x 60 + Minutes1) +/- (Hours2 x 60 + Minutes2), converted back to hours and minutes
Example
2h 30m + 1h 45m = 4h 15m, or 4.25 in decimal hours.
Step-by-step guide
- Enter the first time entry in hours and minutes.
- Choose add or subtract.
- Enter the second time entry and read the total.
Common mistakes
Treating minutes as base-10 when adding by hand - 45 minutes plus 30 minutes is 75 minutes, which converts to 1 hour 15 minutes, not "0.75 hours" added directly to whole hours.
Mixing up decimal hours with minutes - 0.25 hours is 15 minutes, not 25 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What if my subtraction result would be negative?
The calculator shows a negative result with a minus sign, indicating the second time entry was larger than the first.
How is this different from the Time Duration Calculator?
This tool adds or subtracts two standalone durations (like "2h 30m plus 1h 45m"). The Time Duration Calculator instead finds the gap between two clock times (like "9:15 AM to 5:45 PM").
Can I convert the result to just minutes?
Multiply the decimal hours figure by 60, or multiply the whole-hours part by 60 and add the remaining minutes shown.
