LiveHow Roman numerals work
Roman numerals combine seven symbols (I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000). Symbols are added together left to right, except when a smaller symbol appears before a larger one, which means subtract it instead (like IV = 4, not IIII).
2026 converts to MMXXVI (1000+1000+10+10+5+1). Going the other way, MCMXCIV converts to 1994.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no Roman numeral for zero?
The Roman numeral system was developed for counting and trade before the concept of zero as a number was in common use in Western mathematics.
What's the largest number I can convert?
Standard Roman numerals go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers historically used a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000, which isn't included in this standard converter.
Where are Roman numerals still commonly used?
Clock faces, book chapter numbers, movie sequel titles, Super Bowl numbering, and monarch or Pope names (like Elizabeth II) are common modern uses.
