7.0711
Perfect square/root?
No
Negative numbers with an even root have no real result.

The formula

nth root of x = x^(1/n)
Example

Square root of 50: 50^0.5 ≈ 7.0711 (not a perfect square). Square root of 49: 49^0.5 = 7 exactly - a perfect square.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Enter the number you want the root of.
  2. Enter the root - 2 for square root, 3 for cube root, and so on.
  3. Read the result and whether it's an exact (perfect) root.

Common mistakes

Expecting a real answer for the square root of a negative number - even roots of negatives require imaginary numbers, which this calculator doesn't compute.
Forgetting that every positive number actually has two square roots (positive and negative) - this calculator shows the positive (principal) root.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perfect square?

A perfect square is a number that's the square of a whole number, like 25 (5x5) or 49 (7x7). Its square root comes out to a whole number exactly.

Can I find a cube root or higher?

Yes - change the "Root" field to 3 for cube root, 4 for fourth root, and so on. The same formula applies for any root.

Can the root be a decimal?

Yes - a fractional root is mathematically valid and the calculator will compute it, though whole-number roots (2, 3, 4...) are the most common in practice.
