Live

How it works

The full list is randomly shuffled, then distributed evenly across teams one name at a time, so team sizes differ by at most one person
Example

8 names split into 2 teams gives exactly 4 people per team, in a fully random assignment each time.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Paste or type your list of names, one per line.
  2. Set how many teams to split into.
  3. Click "Make teams" for a fresh random split.

Why team sizes stay balanced even when the count doesn't divide evenly

Names are distributed one at a time in round-robin order across teams after shuffling, so if 10 people split into 3 teams, the result is two teams of 3 and one team of 4 - never a lopsided split like 8 and 2. This keeps teams as evenly sized as mathematically possible while still being fully random in who ends up where.

Common mistakes

Requesting more teams than people on the list - the tool automatically caps team count at the number of names available.
Wanting skill-balanced teams (not just size-balanced) - this tool only randomizes, without any awareness of individual skill level or other factors, so manually adjust afterward if that matters for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Random Name Picker?

Random Name Picker selects one or a few winners from a list. This tool instead splits the entire list into multiple balanced groups, with everyone assigned to a team.

Can I account for skill level when making teams?

Not automatically - this tool creates a purely random split. For skill-balanced teams, consider manually swapping a person or two between teams after generating, or splitting your list into skill tiers first and generating separately within each tier.

Is my list of names saved anywhere?

No - everything runs directly in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored anywhere.
