What this exchange rate markup calculator shows

A transfer can advertise a low or zero fee while recovering part of its cost through the exchange rate. This calculator separates the quoted exchange rate from visible charges so you can compare offers using the final recipient amount.

  • Exchange-rate markup: the percentage gap between the dated reference rate and the provider's quoted rate.
  • Hidden FX cost: the receive-currency value lost through that rate difference.
  • Total cost: the combined effect of rate difference, transfer fees, and recipient charges.
  • Effective rate: the amount actually received for each unit of the total sending budget.
  • Recipient keeps: the share of the reference-rate value that reaches the recipient.

How to calculate an exchange rate markup

  1. Choose the sending and receiving currencies.
  2. Enter the full amount you plan to spend.
  3. Copy the exact provider exchange rate from its quote screen.
  4. Add any percentage, fixed, intermediary, or recipient-bank charges.
  5. Compare the final recipient amount and total cost, not the advertised fee alone.

Choose the correct fee basis

ModeInput amount meansCalculation
Fees includedYour maximum total sending budgetPrincipal = (budget − fixed fee) ÷ (1 + percentage fee)
Fees added on topThe amount you want convertedTotal paid = principal × (1 + percentage fee) + fixed fee

The percentage fee is based on the converted principal in both modes. Fixed and percentage fees use the sending currency; recipient charges use the receiving currency. If a provider uses a different fee basis, enter values that match its quote or compare its final paid and received totals separately.

Exchange rate markup formulas

Markup % = (reference rate − quoted rate) ÷ reference rate × 100
Recipient amount = principal × quoted rate − recipient fee
Effective rate = recipient amount ÷ total paid
Total cost vs reference = total paid × reference rate − recipient amount

The total comparison includes transfer fees valued at the reference rate, the FX-rate difference on the converted principal, and recipient fees. A negative cost means the entered quote beats this particular benchmark after the entered fees; it is not a guarantee of a profit or an executable market opportunity.

Two fee examples

Assume USD to EUR, a reference rate of 0.90, a provider rate of 0.87, a fixed fee of USD 10, a 2% principal-based fee and a EUR 3 recipient fee:

Input USD 1,000Fees includedFees added
Converted principalUSD 970.59USD 1,000.00
Total paidUSD 1,000.00USD 1,030.00
Recipient receivesEUR 841.41EUR 867.00
Cost vs referenceEUR 58.59EUR 60.00

These payouts are not a fair equal-budget comparison: the second offer spends USD 30 more. The comparison table suppresses recipient gaps when total budgets differ and identifies the best effective rate instead.

Worked example

Suppose the dated reference rate is 1 USD = 0.90 EUR, but a provider quotes 0.87 EUR. The exchange-rate markup is approximately 3.33%. If the total sending budget is 1,000 USD and there are no other charges, the reference value is 900 EUR while the quoted-rate value is 870 EUR. The rate difference accounts for 30 EUR before any additional fees.

How to compare money-transfer offers fairly

Use the same sending budget, currency pair, payment method, payout method, and quote time for every offer. A fair comparison considers the recipient amount, exchange rate, all visible fees, possible intermediary charges, and estimated arrival time. A reference rate is useful for measuring the spread, but it is not necessarily available to a consumer. For a complete transfer-cost estimate in both calculation directions, use the International Money Transfer Calculator.

Reference rate, quoted rate, and effective rate

Changing the currency pair or refreshing the benchmark clears the current result until a valid rate arrives. Each source has a request timeout; unavailable sources are tried in order, and older responses cannot replace the selected pair. The displayed rate date belongs to the provider, not the time you pressed Refresh.

The reference rate is the dated benchmark loaded by the calculator. The quoted rate is the customer rate copied from a bank or transfer provider. The effective rate divides the final recipient amount by the entire sending budget, so it reflects both the quoted rate and the fees entered. These three figures answer different questions and should not be presented as interchangeable.

Compare, edit and export offers

Save up to five offers for the same input amount, fee basis and currency pair. The table shows total paid, recipient amount and effective rate. Equal-budget rows also show the difference from the highest recipient amount. Each row can be edited or deleted; editing restores its original reference as a clearly labelled manual rate so that a later automatic rate does not silently alter it.

The CSV includes fee basis, principal, total paid, quoted and reference rates, source and date. Offers are held in memory on this page, rather than saved to an account. Reset clears the comparison and returns to the default inputs.

Manual reference rate

Choose My own reference rate to use a historical or independently supplied benchmark. Enter receiving-currency units per one sending-currency unit and, if known, the source date. Numeros does not verify a manually entered benchmark. Changing currencies clears the manual benchmark and actual quoted-rate field so the previous pair’s values are not reused.

Continue your transfer research

Use the Currency Converter for reference conversions, the International Money Transfer Calculator for transfer scenarios, and the Commission Calculator to examine separate percentage charges. A freelancer can use the Freelance Rate Calculator to plan a rate before transfer costs, while the Trip Cost Calculator helps place currency costs in a travel budget.

Accuracy and privacy

Reference rates may be delayed, and provider quotes can change with market conditions, amount, country, payment method, delivery method, customer eligibility, or promotions. The calculations run in your browser. Numeros does not ask for recipient names, account numbers, card details, or login credentials.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing fees only. A wider rate spread can cost more than the visible fee.
  • Using inverse rates incorrectly. Confirm that both rates describe one unit of the send currency in the receive currency.
  • Ignoring the total budget. Check whether a provider deducts fees from the amount or adds them on top.
  • Mixing quote times. Rates can move, so compare offers captured close together.
  • Treating an estimate as final. Recheck the provider's confirmation screen before paying.

Frequently asked questions

What is an exchange-rate markup?

It is the percentage difference between a reference exchange rate and the rate offered to a customer. A lower customer rate means less receive currency for the same converted amount.

Is a zero-fee transfer free?

Not necessarily. A provider may have no separate transfer fee but use a different customer exchange rate. Compare the final recipient amount and effective rate.

Does this show live provider fees?

No. The reference benchmark is fetched automatically, but the provider result uses the quoted rate and costs you enter. Confirm the provider's current price and availability on its own quote screen.

Can the provider rate be better than the reference rate?

It can appear higher because of timing, rate source, promotions, or how fees are applied. Compare rates captured at the same time and review the total amount paid and received.

Which result matters most?

For offers with the same total sending budget and route, the final recipient amount is usually the clearest comparison. Also consider delivery time and payout method.

Which fee mode should I choose?

Choose fees included when the amount entered is your complete spending budget. Choose fees added on top when the amount entered is the principal to convert and the provider charges fees in addition.

Can I compare offers with different total budgets?

The table can show them, but it does not calculate a recipient gap between unequal budgets. The best effective rate means the most receiving currency per unit of total sending-currency cost, within the entered assumptions.

Can I edit an offer without losing its benchmark?

Yes. Edit restores the saved inputs and original reference value as a manual benchmark. Press Update offer to replace the row.

What happens when automatic rates are unavailable?

The result and copy/save controls are disabled until a valid benchmark is available. You can retry or explicitly choose a manual reference. No rate of 1 is silently assumed for different currencies.

Does Reset delete stored account data?

No account or server-side offer record is created. Reset clears only this page’s current inputs and in-memory comparison.

How can I copy if my browser blocks the clipboard?

The tool shows a text box containing the result. Select the text and use your device’s normal Copy command.
