Compare two depths

Change the depth or waste allowance on the right and the difference is stated underneath.

How volume changes with depth

For the same bed area, volume changes in direct proportion to depth: doubling the depth doubles the material requirement.

The formula

Worked example

A 10 ft × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 25 cubic feet (about 0.93 cubic yards) at the mathematical minimum. If you choose a 10% allowance, the plan becomes 27.5 cubic feet -- about 1.02 cubic yards. A 1.00-cubic-yard order would be smaller than that requirement, so choose the next supplier increment that meets or exceeds the calculated amount.

Choosing a mulch depth

There is no single depth that fits every plant, soil, mulch material, and climate. The calculator therefore does not force a horticultural default: enter the depth of new mulch you actually plan to add, and use local government guidance when a project needs a site-specific recommendation.

University of Minnesota Extension gives a general range of about 2 to 4 inches for garden mulch, and advises keeping mulch clear of plant stems or tree trunks. Penn State Extension separately warns against excessive or "volcano" mulching piled against a tree's trunk, which can smother the root flare.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Pick the bed shape. Rectangle and square use length/width or a side; circle uses the diameter, not the radius; if you already know the square footage from another source, use "Known area" directly.
  2. Set the depth of new material. For a top-up, enter only what you plan to add now rather than automatically entering the full finished depth.
  3. Choose an allowance only if you want one. The default is 0%, which is the mathematical minimum. Add a margin based on your site and the way your supplier sells material.

Common mistakes

Rounding below the requirement. A calculated requirement of 1.02 cubic yards is greater than 1.00. If a supplier sells fixed increments, choose an available quantity that covers the requirement rather than rounding it down.
Assuming a package size or supplier price. Products and local pricing vary. Enter the exact bag volume and quoted prices from your supplier, or leave those optional fields blank and use the volume result only.
Piling mulch against a tree trunk. Extension guidance recommends keeping mulch clear of the trunk and root flare rather than mounding it against the bark, to avoid the problems associated with "volcano" mulching.

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need for 100 square feet?

At 3 inches deep, 100 square feet needs 25 cubic feet (about 0.93 cubic yards) before any waste allowance. With a 10% allowance, that becomes about 27.5 cubic feet, or 1.02 cubic yards.

How many 2-cubic-foot bags are in one cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Dividing by a 2-cubic-foot bag gives 13.5 mathematically, so 14 whole bags actually covers one cubic yard.

Can this calculate a circular bed?

Yes -- choose Circle and enter the diameter, not the radius. The area formula (pi times radius squared) is applied automatically before the volume calculation.

How deep should mulch be?

There is no universal depth for every landscape. University of Minnesota Extension gives a general range of 2 to 4 inches for garden mulch. Plant type, mulch material and local conditions can shift what's appropriate.

What does the waste allowance actually do?

It multiplies the geometric minimum by the exact percentage you choose. The default is 0%, so nothing extra is added unless you intentionally enter a purchasing margin.

Should mulch touch a tree trunk?

No. Penn State Extension warns against piling mulch against the trunk. Keep mulch away from the trunk and do not bury the root flare.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?

Sometimes, but not always. Enter your actual bag price and bulk price to compare the quoted material cost for the same calculated requirement. Delivery fees and minimum-order charges still need to be considered separately.
