U.S. Sales Tax Calculator by State

This U.S. Sales Tax Calculator is built specifically for the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Select a state, use a state-only rate, load a state + average local planning estimate, or enter a verified exact combined rate. With your permission, the calculator can detect your U.S. state from browser location and the U.S. Census Geocoder. It does not silently guess city, county or special-district tax.

Compare two states

Compare the same purchase using the current state + average local planning rate for two states. This is useful for broad state-level comparisons, not exact city-level checkout tax.

How U.S. sales tax is built

U.S. sales tax is usually a combination of a state-level general rate and, in many states, one or more local rates. The current state profile can therefore be useful in three different ways: use the statewide rate only, use the state plus a population-weighted average local estimate for planning, or enter a verified exact combined rate for the actual jurisdiction.

State and local sales tax layers A diagram showing the selected state's statewide rate, average local add-on, and resulting average combined planning rate. State rate 7.25% general statewide rate + Avg local add-on 1.78% planning estimate = Avg combined 9.03% not an exact address rate Mobile state and local sales tax layers A vertical diagram showing state rate, average local rate and combined planning rate. California: 7.25% state rate + 1.78% average local estimate = 9.03% average combined planning rate.

Step-by-step guide

1
Select the state or use location detection

Choose any state or Washington, D.C. If you press Use my location, your browser asks permission and the U.S. Census Geocoder is used to identify the state. The page does not silently request precise location.

2
Choose the rate basis

Use state-only for the statewide general rate, state + average local for broad planning, or custom combined when you already have a verified jurisdiction rate.

3
Enter the purchase and taxable share

A normal fully taxable purchase uses 100%. Lower the taxable share only if you already know that part of the transaction is exempt or otherwise not taxable.

4
Check the tax layer before using the total

The result shows the loaded rate source and keeps state, local estimate and custom-rate choices visible so a planning estimate is not mistaken for an exact checkout rate.

Why this calculator is U.S.-only

Sales tax in the United States is built around state and local jurisdictions rather than a single national VAT. This page therefore focuses only on U.S. sales tax. For VAT or GST in other countries, use the VAT Calculator instead. Keeping the tools separate avoids mixing U.S. state/local sourcing rules with VAT systems.

State rate vs local sales tax

As of July 1, 2026, 45 states impose a statewide sales tax and 38 states allow local sales taxes. Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Alaska is the important exception because localities can still impose sales taxes even though the state rate is zero. The state + average local option uses a population-weighted average local rate, so it is useful for comparison but is not a promise about a specific store or address.

Why ZIP code alone is not enough

The IRS notes that many ZIP codes contain more than one local taxing jurisdiction and that moving within the same ZIP can still put a taxpayer in a different local jurisdiction. That is why this calculator does not claim that a ZIP code or state selection automatically produces an exact checkout rate.

Exact local rate remains a separate fact.
The location button detects the state, not the exact city/county/special-district sales-tax rate. If you know the verified combined rate for the transaction, switch to Verified custom combined rate.

Discounts and partially taxable purchases

The optional discount model reduces the selling price before tax. The taxable-share field can then model a purchase where only part of the post-discount amount is taxable. This is an arithmetic tool, not a taxability lookup. Coupon, rebate, grocery, prescription, clothing, digital-product and service rules vary by state and sometimes by locality. For discount-only math, use the Discount Calculator.

Reverse included sales tax

If the final price already includes tax, the tax cannot be recovered by simply multiplying the final total by the rate. The calculator solves backward using the loaded rate and taxable share. This is useful for receipt reconstruction and tax-inclusive pricing scenarios.

Sales tax is not markup or profit

Sales tax collected from a customer is not the same as a business margin. Use the Markup Calculator or Profit Margin Calculator to analyze pricing, and the Net Profit Calculator for business profit after expenses.

Cases this calculator does not fully model

1
Product and service taxability

Groceries, clothing, medicine, software, digital goods and services can have special rules. The loaded state rate does not decide whether the item is taxable.

2
County, city and special-district precision

Average local rates are statewide planning estimates. Exact local combinations may differ materially from the average.

3
Sourcing, marketplace and remote-seller rules

Destination, origin, marketplace-facilitator, economic-nexus and remote-seller rules can affect which jurisdiction's tax applies.

4
Sales-tax holidays and special rates

Temporary holidays, local-option rules and product-specific rates require current jurisdiction guidance and are not inferred from the general state profile.

Common mistakes

Treating the statewide rate as the exact checkout rate. Local taxes can add to the state rate in many states.
Assuming a ZIP code identifies one tax district. A ZIP can cross multiple local taxing jurisdictions.
Multiplying a tax-inclusive total by the rate. Reverse tax requires backing the pre-tax amount out of the final total.
Mixing sales tax with tip, commission or margin. Keep these calculations separate with the Tip Calculator or Commission Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include all 50 states?

Yes. It includes all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., with state-level general rates and average-local planning data where applicable.

Can it detect my state automatically?

Yes, after you press Use my location and grant browser permission. The coordinates are sent to the U.S. Census Geocoder to identify the state. The exact local sales-tax rate is not inferred automatically.

Why is the local rate called an estimate?

The local figure is a population-weighted statewide average. Cities, counties and special districts can have different rates, so the average is best for state-level planning and comparison.

Which states have no statewide sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide general sales tax. Alaska permits local sales taxes.

Is this the same as the VAT Calculator?

No. This page is U.S.-only and focuses on state and local sales tax. The VAT Calculator is the separate tool for VAT/GST-style systems.
