Average GPA needed going forward
4.10

The formula

Needed average GPA = ( (Target GPA x Total future credits) - (Current GPA x Current credits) ) / Remaining credits
Example

A 3.2 GPA over 60 credits, targeting 3.5 with 30 credits remaining: needed average = (3.5x90 - 3.2x60) / 30 = 4.10 - which exceeds the 4.0 maximum, meaning this specific target isn't achievable within just 30 more credits.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Enter your current GPA and total credits completed so far.
  2. Enter your target GPA and how many credits you have left before graduating (or before whatever deadline your goal applies to).
  3. Read the average GPA you need in your remaining coursework - if it's above 4.0, the target isn't mathematically reachable in that many credits.

What to do when the target isn't achievable

Seeing "not achievable" is useful information, not a dead end - it means the specific combination of target GPA and remaining credits doesn't work, but adjusting either input often reveals a realistic path. Extending the timeline (more remaining credits, if that's an option) lowers the average needed, since a larger number of future credits has more room to absorb the past average. Alternatively, adjusting the target GPA slightly down shows what's genuinely achievable at your current pace, which can be a more useful goal to actually work toward.

Common mistakes

Not noticing when the needed average exceeds 4.0 - this means the target is out of reach given the current inputs, not a typo or calculator error.
Confusing "remaining credits" with total credits needed to graduate - this field specifically means only what's left, not your full degree requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Why would the needed GPA come out above 4.0?

It happens when the gap between your current GPA and target is too large to close within the remaining credits available - mathematically, even a perfect 4.0 average going forward wouldn't be enough to reach the target in that specific credit window.

Does this account for a weighted GPA scale above 4.0?

This version assumes a standard 4.0 maximum. If your school's weighted scale allows GPAs above 4.0 for honors or AP courses, the "not achievable" threshold would be higher than 4.0 accordingly - adjust your interpretation based on your school's actual maximum.

How is this different from the Semester GPA Calculator?

The Semester GPA Calculator tells you your new cumulative GPA after a semester you've already completed. This tool works in the opposite direction - starting from a future goal and working backward to find what you need to achieve it.
