The formula

a^2 + b^2 = c^2 (c is always the hypotenuse - the longest side, opposite the right angle)

Legs 3 and 4: c = sqrt(3^2 + 4^2) = sqrt(9+16) = sqrt(25) = 5. Given hypotenuse 13 and leg 5: the other leg = sqrt(13^2 - 5^2) = sqrt(144) = 12.
